A Message from the Director

ILC International Lumbago Clinic was founded in 2018 in Shin-Osaka as the first※3 medical institution in Asia that could perform PIDD and DST treatments. ILC is also located in a key area that is accessible by several modes of transportation.

At our clinic, we offer medical treatment with a combined focus on the spinal conditions that cause low back pain.

※3 According to research by Operation Japan (Ltd.)

There was a time when treatment for spinal conditions meant choosing between conservative management and surgery, but minimally invasive PLDD treatment for herniated discs began to take the place of surgical treatment in Japan in the 1980s. Although the risk of complications of minimally invasive treatment was low compared with conventional surgical treatment, it was only suitable for herniated discs and was in that sense unsatisfactory.

PODD treatment had begun to be used abroad at that time for herniated discs and discitis, but it was by no means adequate. However, after that, PIDD started being used in Europe for herniated discs, which led to it gaining a place among the health services covered by insurance in the European Union.

Additionally, after that, in the 2010s, DST(Discseel™) began to be used in North America. DST(Discseel™) ’s distinguishing feature is that it can repair and regenerate intervertebral discs. Because of that repair and regeneration, its targeted conditions expanded greatly, even to cases of spinal stenosis and post-surgical treatment of the spine.

As stated above, although minimally invasive treatment for spinal conditions was developing on a large scale in Europe and North America, by contrast, in Asia, including Japan, it had continued to stagnate since the 1990s. The reason for that was probably the influence of the exclusive aspect of a system in Japan that focused on academic conferences, cliques, and the long continuance of care that was not patient- but institution-centered.

At ILC International Lumbago Clinic, we will continue to offer our patients not only PLDD and PODD, not only PIDD and DST(Discseel™) commonly practiced in Europe and North America, but also whatever advanced treatment technologies will be developed in the future.

Finally, we would like to acknowledge and express our gratitude to Dr. Marco Leonardi, Dr. Kevin Pauza, and Ljubljana University Medical Centre for their considerable cooperation.
